Aerial Photography

What is Aerial Photography?

Aerial photography is the taking of photographs from an aircraft or other flying objects. Platforms for aerial photography include fixed-wing aircraft, helicopters, unmanned aerial vehicles, balloons, blimps and dirigibles, rockets, pigeons, kites, parachutes, stand-alone telescoping, and vehicle-mounted poles.

In our case, we use a variety of unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) also more commonly known as drones to capture aerial imagery.  For us, flying drones is like having a window seat to the world.  Things simply look different from above, a sight that you can’t help but love.

When Did Aerial Photography Start?

Gaspar Felix Tournachon, more commonly known as “Nadar,” is credited with taking the first successful aerial photograph in 1858 from a hot air balloon tethered 262 feet over Petit-Bicêtre (now Petit-Clamart), just outside Paris; his original photos have been lost.

– Aerial Photography’s Surprising Role in History, By Olivia B. Waxman –

Our journey into Aerial Photography started in May of 2016 on the island of Ambergris Caye in Beautiful Belize, Central America.  Seeing the Island from the air was fascinating while taking the short flight from Belize City to San Pedro and that fascination was amplified when given the opportunity to fly a drone on a commercial construction site with local land developer Dave Mitchell.

We’ve been taking to the skies ever since!

What is Aerial Photography Used For?

Aerial photography is used in cartography, land-use planning, archaeology, movie production, environmental studies, espionage, commercial advertising, conveyancing, and other fields. Here at ARO Aerial, we have used them in a variety of ways from surveying vacant land and capturing imagery for Real Estate properties, to Performing Roof and Solar Inspections, as well as using them to create 3D object models.

Where ground shots are typically taken from 3 to 6 feet from the ground depending on the tripod or the height of the photographer, drones have literally brought photography to new heights. The 100 ft view adds prospective to the neighborhood of a home or commercial real estate property. They can capture unique vantage points of parks, landmarks, or whatever sights we randomly want to see.

Aerial Photography really has changed the world, how its viewed anyways. Anything you would capture with a cellphone or a traditional DSLR or point and shoot camera, you can capture uniquely with a Drone.

The sky is the limit (see what we did there ;-)) and we can also do weddings, parties, events, and much more. Fill out a contact form and we can work together to capture something for you.

How Much Does Aerial Photography Cost?

The national average cost for aerial photography is $250–$350. The length of the photography shoot, resolution, and services performed all affect the total cost of aerial photography and videography. A shoot longer than 90 minutes may add $50 – $70 per additional hour.

Here at ARO Aerial, our basic Aerial Photography services start at $150 an hour. We will take the time to properly plan and schedule your shoot and make sure to discuss deliverables and a reasonable timeframe for completion.
